IRAs

Your golden years should be just that.

The ability to retire and still maintain a comfortable lifestyle is probably something you don’t think about, or even plan for, on a regular basis. In fact, 33% of all Americans admit they have absolutely no retirement savings, and only 23% have at least $10,000 put away.*

The reality here is that you’re going to need enough income to last at least 14 years or more, which is the average number of years Americans live post-retirement.* And, unfortunately, for the majority of us, Social Security is not going to fill the void, as fully as it has in the past.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that it’s both simple and painless to get a reliable retirement savings plan in place and working for you.

An IRA is the cornerstone of your plan, especially if your employer offers no 401K or other retirement savings plan.

There are two different ways you can invest in an IRA with us:

  • IRA Share Account**
    • It only takes $200 to get started.
    • You’ll earn high dividend rates on your investment.
    • We offer flexible contribution options, such as payroll deduction, so you can regularly deposit to your account without having to remember to do so.
  • IRA Certificate**
    • It only takes $500 to get started.
    • You’ll earn even higher dividend rates than with an IRA Share Account.
    • We offer terms from 12 to 60 months.
    • Typically, the longer the term, the higher the Annual Percentage Yield (APY).

There are two different types of IRAs, each with its own tax benefits:

Traditional IRAs offer a tax deferral now on qualified contributions. For example, if you make $60,000 annually and contribute $5,000 to a Traditional IRA, the IRS will only tax you on $55,000 of income. Taxes are not paid on your IRA contributions until you start making withdrawals at retirement age.

Roth IRAs do not offer an “up front” tax deferral, but the dividend earnings paid out on your Roth IRA contributions over the years may be tax-free when you start withdrawing them at retirement.

There’s even a third type of IRA that makes higher learning easier.

A Coverdell Education Account gives you the ability to put money aside to pay for education expenses. The earnings on the account balance are tax-free if they are used to pay for qualified educational expenses.

Your tax advisor can offer details on which type of IRA best suits your needs, depending on your goals, your age and how much you will be contributing annually.

Enjoy the freedom to prosper. You can open any CU of NJ IRA by stopping by any of our convenient branch locations.
