EWING, N.J.— Credit Union of New Jersey recently awarded a $3,000 unrestricted grant to the John O. Wilson Hamilton Neighborhood Center, Inc. to assist in the non-profit’s mission to strengthen individuals, support families and build thriving communities. The grant money will be used to help the center meet the escalating costs of day-to-day operations.
The Wilson Center, as it is more commonly known, was founded as a childcare center in 1967 in the basement of Saint Phillips Baptist Church by Pastor John O. Wilson. Through the years, the Center has grown to support programs, such as a weekly food pantry, emergency financial assistance for back rent and utilities, a computer lab, health screenings/clinics, senior nutrition counseling and activities and more.
“Credit Union of New Jersey will make a significant impact for this group,” said Andrew Jaeger, President and CEO of Credit Union of New Jersey. “We have already discussed future partnerships that will bring much-needed awareness and education around understanding and building credit, safeguarding privacy and other financial education resources that will enable those who use the Wilson Center to become better informed about money matters.”
The Center currently offers free in-person and online workshops to educate individuals and families on important topics, like diabetes management, stroke awareness, healthy eating, domestic violence, estate planning, stress management, self-defense classes for women and computer literacy, to name just a few. Adding a financial component provided by Credit Union of New Jersey is a perfect fit for an organization that is already helping people help themselves—a natural progression of the “People Helping People” philosophy of credit unions across the country.
